The Gift of Life Donor Program is a non-profit organization in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware that coordinates life-saving organ transplants and supports the families of donors and recipients alike throughout the process.
Two years ago, my cousin Kellie passed away unexpectedly at a young age. Through organ donation, she was able to save the lives of three strangers in need of transplants. This information and the support from the Gift of Life program was incredibly helpful to her family. Since her death, they have been amazing at spreading the message of how to get involved and how to register as a donor.
They set up ‘Team Kellie’ and take part in the annual Donor Dash– a 3, 5, or 10k at the Philadelphia Museum of Art- to raise money for the program and increase awareness of the need for tissue donation. They volunteer at the Gift of Life Family House that serves as kind of ‘home away from home’ for transplant families by offering lodging and support services throughout transplant- related care.
The Gift of Life program offers a lot of other programs for donor and recipient families. For more information and to see how you can get involved, check out the Gift of Life website.
If you would like to support Team Kellie in this year’s Donor Dash on April 17th, you can join the team or leave a donation here.
Until next time,
Be kind and live purposely.
